Fun ideas for your self care routine

What do you think of when you hear “self-care”?

Do you think of spa days, face masks, and cups of tea?

How about a long run, a relaxing yoga session, or a walk in the outdoors?

Maybe it’s snuggling up with a blanket and a good book, hanging out with friends, or just treating yourself to something special.

Self care is different for everyone, but it has a few factors in common…

It should be fun and make you feel good!

So, while you’re putting together your self-care routine, here are 6 super fun and creative ideas for you to try.

It's time to treat yourself!

Make a vision board

Make a vision board

Vision boards are a representation of the life you want to have and the people, things, and experiences you want to attract.

You can create a physical one, like the one above, with cutouts of pretty pictures and inspiring words, or you can create a digital one, like this post on how to make a vision board with Pinterest.

Either way is perfectly wonderful and fun! It’s a great self-care activity to create it and then to continuously visualize these images until they appear into your life.

On my vision board above, I included pictures that represented inspiring women and girls through my coloring pages. I also wanted it to include adventure and a balance of travel and home life. Plus, pictures of music, fun, and romance!

Let your imagination run wild and dream big on your vision board. Remember, this is meant to be fun! 😍

Create a dance/pump up playlist

Create a dance playlist

Don’t you just LOVE a good dance party? A mini dance session always gets me pumped up!

Instead of searching for dance music when you feel the need to boogie, why not be ready at all times with a hoppin’ dance playlist?

Put together a list of songs on Spotify that will instantly make you feel good. Look for upbeat music with positive lyrics (it makes a difference!).

Try some of these songs to get you started:

  • “Dancing Queen” (obviously) Mama Mia or Abba version

  • “Happy” by Pharrell Williams

  • “Feel It Still” by Portugal. The Man.

  • “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift (which I have included the music video in the show notes, because it’s just amazing.)

Bonus tip: Get a disco ball. Just trust me. I have three of them and I’m always prepared for a dance party.

Pick a spirit animal

Pick a spirit animal

You know those t-shirts that say “sloths/unicorns/etc are my spirit animal”?

These shirts are on to something.

There is something really powerful about having a visual to represent what you want more of in life. Picking a spirit animal can be a really fun way to do just this.

Think about what these animals represent:

  • Sloth - peace, relaxation, and chill
  • Unicorn - magic, color, and sparkle
  • Lemur - fun, energy, and lightness
  • Owl - wisdom, patience, and strategy

What do you want more of in your life? Do you want more happiness, fun, peace, wisdom, energy, etc? Think of an animal that represents that to you. You might even pick a few animals!

You can also choose a person as you spirit animal or inspiration. If you’re inspired by a certain Disney princess or a public/historical figure, then choose them! They can make up your inspiration council.

Once you’ve chosen your inspiration, surround yourself with visual representations of it. You don’t need to go overboard and exclusively wear a unicorn onesie every day (unless you’re into that), but surround yourself with daily small reminders, such as:

  • Inspirational quotes or sayings with your animal/person
  • Artwork (even better if you created it)
  • Books on the subject (i.e. Sloth Wisdom)
  • A t-shirt or two
  • Laptop stickers, themed water bottles, office supplies, etc

Giggle as often as possible

Giggle as often as possible

Giggling and laughing is REALLY good for your health. Trust me, I’m a certified laughter professional. (No really, check my credentials.)

A super fun self-care activity is intentional laughing. This just means that you actually make time for laughing.

Here are some ideas to get you giggling:

  • Hang out with friends (this usually leads to lots of laughs)

  • Watch a funny movie

  • Look at adorable animal videos (this usually induces a type of “AWWWWWW” laughing)

  • Practice Laughter Yoga

My absolute favorite way to laugh is Laughter Yoga. Did you know that was a thing? It is!

Laughter Yoga is a unique form of group (or solo) exercise where anyone can laugh for no reason! You don’t need jokes, humor, or comedy to participate in laughter yoga (though funny faces and silliness can definitely be involved).

It involves a combination of laughter and breathing exercises. It’s fun, super silly, and guaranteed to be hilarious.

I'm a certified Laughter Yoga Leader. Check out the video below to laugh along with me!

Color for stress relief

Mental Health Mandalas was designed to give you emotional support

Coloring is one of my favorite self-care activities. It’s calming and creative all at the same time.

But did you know that coloring can actually change your life?

I’m not just talking about buying a new pack of glitter markers (though that is the best feeling ever).

I’m talking about how coloring can lead to a deep sense of inner peace and happiness. How it can help you work through life’s toughest problems and help you get to the land of awesomeness on the other side.

But how?

Intentional coloring with inspirational coloring pages, like the one pictured above!

With intentional coloring, it’s not so much about loving to color, or even to create... it’s all about spending time with yourself and what’s on the page.

It puts you into that high vibe coloring zone for an extended period of time. Plus, coloring is super relaxing.

Buy cute pajamas

Buy cute pajamas for self care

Pajamas make a HUGE difference in your self-care routine.

You may not think so, until you have cute pajamas (then, you’ll understand).

For me, this is my pink s’more onesie from Me Undies. I love something fun and super soft, with pockets and a hood.

For you, cute pajamas may include your spirit animal (hello unicorn onesie) or a pair of ultra soft leggings and a cute top.

Whatever makes you feel cute and comfy.

It will add a whole new level to anything you do in your self-care routine.
