Kickstart Your Goals and Make 2019 The Best Year Ever! | EP 22

How would you like to make 2019 your best year ever? The year where you make things happen and you have a ton of fun along the way. That’s what we’re going to cover in this episode. We’ll talk about how to not only set goals, but how to kickstart your goal setting in January, and make 2019 the best year ever. Plus, a ton of other fun information on gratitude, goal setting parties, tracking your goals, celebrating your wins, and more! #goalsetting #goalplanning #newyear #resolutions

It’s officially 2019 and this next year is full of potential, opportunity, and unknowns. It can be either exciting or overwhelming to think that we have a whole year ahead of us. It all depends on the way you look at it.

Whenever I find myself in a new beginning, I feel it fitting to quote the great Hunter Hayes:

“There’s nothing like starting over. There’s nothing like shedding a heartache, writing a new page, say what you want to say. There’s nothing like a heart wide open, that bittersweet comfort of knowing you can let go, take the weight off your shoulders. There’s nothing like starting over.” - Hunter Hayes, Nothing Like Starting Over

At some point in 2018, you may have had heartaches. I know I did. Things that didn’t work out like I planned. A relationship that ended with much heartbreak. Whatever that heartache was for you this year, lean into that bittersweet comfort of knowing that you can let go and take the weight off your shoulders. This is a new year. It’s your year.

But to focus on 2019, we must leave 2018 behind. Remember the good things that happened and be happy because more good things are coming. Be grateful for the bad things and remember the lessons you learned. Then, let the past be in the past.

Today, we are following the words of Hunter Hayes. We are writing our new page and saying what we want to say! We’re going to set beautiful goals and kickstart those goals to make 2019 the best year ever.

Many of the goal setting strategies we’ll talk about today come from my very wise and productivity talented friend Alyssa, from episode 3 How to Create a Plan that Brings Your Dreams to life. If you haven’t checked that episode out, go listen to it for more awesome goal setting advice.

On New Year’s Day, I went over to see Alyssa and her husband Heath and we had a 9 hour goal setting party. Yes I said 9 hours. Why so long? Well one, we were having a lot of fun with it and enjoying a lot of good conversation/reflection. Two, Alyssa is a serious planner and made us all spreadsheets to track and plan our lives. Bless you Alyssa.  🙌

So, based on what we did at our goal setting party, here are my tips for kickstarting your goals to make 2019 the best year ever!

Make goal setting an event

Before we even get into the actual goal setting, we need to hype the energy around goal setting. Even if you LOVE planning, you may not always love reviewing your goals (especially if you feel behind on achieving them).

This is why we had a goal setting party. We did not simply write goals, we made it an event, with friends, food, and activities! Everything is more exciting when you make a big deal out of it. You can turn anything into a “party”, even reviewing or making goals on your own.

Instead of simply sitting down to write your goals, you could:

  • Put on a great music playlist (slower for reflection, upbeat for goal setting, with dance breaks in between tasks)

  • Make some tasty snacks and drink your favorite tasty beverage

  • Go somewhere really beautiful and pack a picnic

  • Sit down at your favorite coffee shop with a latte

  • Invite friends over and do goal setting activities (make vision boards, bucket lists, affirmations, and more!)

Keep this in mind when creating your goals in January and when you're reviewing your goals throughout the year. This is your life. Make it fun!

pink dots large.png

Start with gratitude

  • To focus on 2019 and get into the right mindset, start with having gratitude for all the wonderful and not so wonderful things that happened in 2018. Ask yourself these questions:

    • What am I grateful for about 2018?

    • What are some really good things happened?

    • What heartaches or challenges did I overcome and what did I learn?

    • What would I like to see more of in my life this next year?

Be grateful for who you were in 2018 and let it be. Now, let’s decide who you’re going to be in 2019.

cHOOSE 3 VALUES FOR THE YEAR

Next, we are going to set a framework for the year and we will do this by setting 3 values for 2019. We will use these values to create goals and make decisions.

The values I chose this year are Financial Stability/Freedom, Travel, and Growth (Personal/Business). It felt weird to make my number one value this year about financials, but if I didn’t, I wouldn’t be prepared to do all of the really fun things I want to do this year.

I spent a lot of my savings last year because I invested in my album “Music & Lyrics”, travel, and personal growth opportunities and certifications. I’m so happy to have my album, travel memories, and certifications! Now that I’ve invested in those areas of my life, I need to invest back into my finances.

Having these values in place, will be so helpful this year when making decisions in all areas of your life. For example, if I have the opportunity to go on a trip, I’ll ask myself “Would I rather go on this trip or have that X amount of money (cost of the trip) in my savings right now?”.

Based on where I’m at with my finances, I can decide to go on the trip (spend the money), not go on the trip (save the money), or find a third option (make that much extra money!)

Think about what these values for the year will be for your life. Here are some ideas to get you thinking:

  • Financial Stability

  • Travel

  • Clarity/Direction

  • Family

  • Personal Growth

  • Starting a business

  • Growing a business

Your values can be a word, a phrase, or a feeling that you desire. After you choose your values, rank them in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This may change throughout the year, but the order is important in decision making.

pink dots large.png

Set goals in 5 MAIN areas:

Next, we are going to look at goals in 5 areas of your life: Financial, Personal growth, Health/fitness, Relationships, and Business. Start by setting 2-3 annual goals for each of these areas. Here are some examples:

Financial

  • Make X amount a month

  • Put X amount in savings

  • Pay off X amount of debt

Personal growth

  • Read 25 books

  • Go on a solo trip

  • Start a meditation habit

Health/fitness

  • Try a gluten free diet for 30 days

  • Walk for 15 minutes a day

  • Run a marathon

Relationships

  • Go on a girl’s trip

  • Have a weekly date night

  • Have X amount of family time each week

Business/Career

  • Start a business

  • Create another source of income

  • Get a promotion at work

Break goals down into action steps for Q1

Now that you have your main goals for each area, we are going to break down what you’re going to do in the next 3 months or the first quarter of the year. Realistically, what can you accomplish by the end of March in each of these areas? Then, work backwards to write down what you need to accomplish each month to reach that goal.

For example, to save $3,000 by the end of March, you’ll need to put $1,000 a month in savings in January, February, and March.

To try a gluten free diet for 30 days by the end of March, you’ll need to research the diet and meal plan at least 30 days before the end of March.

Some goals will be short term (try a 30 day diet) and some will be long term (save X amount of money). Use your values (and your schedule) to determine what goals you will work towards during Q1 and what goals you will complete.

Once you’ve done this first part of the year, you can work on breaking down your goals and action steps for Q2, (April - June), Q3 (July - September), and Q4 (October-DecEmber).

Then, get to work on completing those action steps!!

Now that you’ve set up your goals, here are some tips for how to kickstart your progress on all the great things you want to do this year.

Create Rewards

Identify some type of reward to go with each of your goals. This will give you something to look forward to and work towards. This may be something that you’ll do for yourself when you reach a goal or maybe the end result of achieving your goal.

I want financial stability, but having X amount of money in my savings account is not nearly exciting as thinking about the trailer I want to buy when I’ve saved up enough money. Anytime I think about spending money, I think about my trailer and how much I want to buy it in cash, with plenty of savings left over. Instead of a number in my bank account, now it’s a vision that I can work towards.

Give yourself some quick wins

If you really want to kickstart your goals this year, start by knocking out some goals in the first month of the year. Like right now!

We are going to take an approach similar to Dave Ramsey’s Debt Snowball, but with goals! If you’re not familiar with the Debt Snowball, it's when you organize your debts, smallest to largest. You do whatever possible to get the money to pay off that first debt immediately (have a garage sale, get a second job, etc). Then, you put the money you were paying on that debt to make extra payments on the next largest debt. Thereby snowballing your debt payoff.

We’re going to do that, but with goal setting! Instead of organizing your goals smallest to largest, I want you to think of the goal that will have the largest impact on the rest of your year. The one that would help you snowball your momentum.

This is the goal that would make 2019 pretty awesome if you knocked it out in January. Most likely, this will be a goal tied to your #1 value that also impacts the other two values in a positive way.

For me, this was launching at Etsy shop of digital printables to help others create a positive mindset. This goal creates another source of income that will grow over time, which contributes to my financial stability/freedom value. It is all digital products, which allows me to travel and have a flexible schedule. It forces me to grow my business and personal comfort zones, contributing to my growth value.

Check out the Etsy shop here for positivity printables :)

From idea to launch, this goal took me three weeks to complete. Three all consuming, intense, put a lot of other things on the back burner weeks to complete, but is now officially launched in the first month of the year. Now that I’ve taken the time to set it up for success and grow throughout the year, I can maintain it, while using my time now to snowball the momentum on other goals.

So what is that goal for you? What goal can you hustle hustle hustle on these next few weeks to complete that will also benefit the rest of your goals this year?

Track your progress and Review

This is a step that I have very much overlooked in the past, but is SO important. If you don’t write down what you’re doing, you’ll forget what you did. Write down all the tasks you do associated with your goal. Then, go back and review it often. You might find that a small percentage of tasks are making huge progress towards your goal. Do more of those!

Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate!

Finally, celebrate!!! Celebrate every step of the way. Celebrate that you made it to the end of this blog post. Celebrate that you’re going to have a pretty amazing year, full of clear direction and opportunities. Make every step and achievement a celebration party.

Shout this affirmation from the rooftops: “2019 is going to be the best year ever!"

I can’t wait to see what 2019 holds for you :) Let me know how your goal setting goes in the comments below!

Book recommendation

If you are a starter like me, this book will be SO helpful for your goal setting this year. I feel more confident that I can really make things happen this year after reading this book.

It also talks about setting realistic goals, using data to your advantage, and all sorts of other very useful information!

If you’re more of a finisher than a starter, the author also has another book called “Start” that Alyssa highly recommends.

      Kathryn Cockrell

Today on the podcast, I’m interviewing my good friend, Kathryn Cockrell.

      Kathryn is a BOSS.

      • She’s been running her business, Happy Hounds, since she was 15. BOSS.

      • She’s a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo. BOSS.

      • She’s backpacked through Europe. BOSS.

      • She went on an epic van trip across the country by herself. BOSS.

      • AND SHE BOUGHT A FREAKING YACHT. BOSS.

If you aren’t convinced of her bossness, just listen to this episode. Kathryn continues to impress and inspire me every day with her fearlessness to push her comfort zones. She’s not afraid of discomfort. In fact, she seeks it out, so she can improve herself, her business, and her quality of life.

      pink dots large.png

Kathryn’s tips for creating a boss mindset:

      • Seek out mentors to help you in all aspects of your journey. Surround yourself with people who are a few steps ahead of you and ask for guidance. Study people who are doing it right.

      • Create a support group of the people you look up to. You don’t even have to know these people. Just use their wisdom, their books, their thoughts, as your inspiration and guidance.

      • Lean in to your discomfort. It’s okay to be uncomfortable. It’s okay to be scared. It’s okay to not know what that next step is. You just have to know what the goal is and keep working towards that.

      • Don’t forget to enjoy your life! You need to work hard, but you also need to enjoy the world we live in, and be in the moment.

In today's episode, we talk about:

      • Creating a boss mindset

      • Starting a business at a young age

      • Starting a business that not only lasts through the years, but also creates freedom

      • Building confidence through business and martial arts

      • Seeking adventure and living your most interesting life

      pink dots large.png

      Book recommendation:

Here is the very interesting book on plagues that Kathryn mentioned in the interview!

I was very impressed in our interview how Kathryn tied the subject of plagues into her topic of leaning in your discomfort in business.

Really brought the subject full circle!

What is Laughter Yoga? + How You Can Use It To Make Your Life More Awesome! | EP 20

Do you ever just want more happiness in your life?

Do you ever long to laugh, giggle, smile and feel good?

Do you ever wonder… “How can I put more of these good, awesome feelings into my life?!?!”

Well, you’re in luck because today I’m going to show you how you can make your life super awesome with a little something called Laughter Yoga.

          Pink polka dots.png

Okay… so what is Laughter Yoga?

Laughter Yoga is a unique form of group exercise where anyone can laugh for no reason! You don’t need jokes, humor, or comedy to participate in laughter yoga (though funny faces and silliness can definitely be involved).

Laughter is initiated in the group through various exercises and soon turns into real, contagious laughter through eye contact and childlike playfulness.

It’s called Laughter Yoga because it combines laughing with yoga breathing techniques, not because you’ll be doing any downward facing dog poses. However, stretching can be a part of laughter yoga sessions. This combination of laughter and yoga breathing brings more oxygen to the body and the brain, while expelling stale air in the lungs. This makes one feel more energetic and healthy after practicing laughter yoga.

Laughter Yoga is based on scientific research, which states that the body can’t distinguish between real and fake laughter, if done with willingness. You get the same benefits either way. So, even if you aren’t feeling particularly joyful, you can stimulate laughter and eventually it will become real, making you feel much more awesome. You can read up on the latest research on Laughter Yoga at LaughterYoga.org.

It was started in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria in a Mumbai park with just 5 people in India. Since then, Laughter Yoga has exploded! There are now over 1,000 laughter clubs in over 100 countries around the world.

So, you know why laughter is important, but why do you need laughter yoga?

          pink dots large.png

3 Reasons Why You Should Practice Laughter Yoga

Laughter should be sustained for at least 10-15 minutes to get the maximum health benefits. When was the last time you laughed for 10-15 minutes on command? Probably never, unless you’re just naturally giggly. This is why you should practice laughter yoga! You can use the exercises to stimulate a sustained 10-15 minutes of laughter. Since it is a form of exercise, you can laugh as long as you want. When we laugh throughout the day, it’s usually only for 3-4 seconds at a time. This is not nearly long enough to get the full benefits of laughing.

Laughter should be deep and hearty laughter from the diaphragm. It should be a big belly laugh, which is not always socially acceptable. Laughter yoga provides as safe environment to belly laugh to your heart’s content!

Don’t leave your laughter to chance. Laughter yoga is laughing unconditionally. You don’t have to wait for something funny to happen. You make laughter happen at any time. If you leave laughter to chance, based on humor, it may not happen. Use laughter yoga to be sure that you get the health and mood boosting benefits of laughing in your life.

          Pink polka dots.png

          How Often Should You Laugh?

Ideally, you should laugh for 10-15 minutes every day. If you’ve never done this before, that can be a lot of laughing. Try to practice your laughter exercises as often as you can and work up to every day if possible. Just make sure that you get your 10-15 minutes in at a time. Remember, it’s gotta be sustained! Don’t just laugh for 3 minutes in the morning and then laugh 4 more minutes later that day. Unless that’s in addition to your 10-15 minute practice ;D

          Pink polka dots.png

A word about safety and laughter

Just like any other type of exercise, you may want to take precautions if you have certain medical conditions. Including hernia, incontinence, hemorrhoids, heart problems, chest pain, pregnancy, major surgeries, epilepsy, cold and flu, or severe backache. If you have any of these conditions, first consult your doctor before practicing Laughter Yoga.

          pink dots large.png

          Health Benefits of Laughter Yoga

Laughter Yoga has sooooo many health benefits! The best part is that you can start feeling the benefits of laughter right away. It is especially good for increasing energy, reducing stress-related illnesses, and balancing your emotional state. Research has shown that laughing causes a kind of “internal jogging” that massages your internal organs and increases circulation, which flushes your body of toxins and allows you to operate at peak performance!

Here are five awesome health benefits of laughter yoga:

          1. Laughter yoga will instantly increase your mood and you’ll find yourself bursting into more spontaneous laughter throughout the day

          2. Laughter yoga is a healthy exercise that brings more oxygen into the body, reducing physical, mental, and emotional stress all at the same time.

          3. Laughter yoga strengthens the immune system and, according to my training manual, may help a variety of conditions, including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression, arthritis, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, backache, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, menstrual disorders, cancer and many others.

          4. Laughter yoga will improve relationships because laughter is a positive energy that allows you to connect with others more easily.

          5. Laughter yoga gives you a positive attitude, even in tough times, by increasing your optimism and positive mental state.

          pink dots large.png

Do a one minute laughter challenge!

Start at minute 8:45 of the episode to join in on the laughter challenge! We are going to laugh for one minute straight for no reason at all, other than I told you to!

Make sure that you are somewhere you can do this privately, otherwise you will probably get some pretty interesting looks from other people.

If someone else is around, get them to join in with you! It’s much easier to do a laughter challenge with others.

If you are by yourself, shrug your shoulders while laughing, as if saying “I don’t know why I’m laughing!”. Looking in a mirror can also be really helpful to make yourself laugh longer :)

          Alright! Let’s do this! :D

          pink dots large.png

          What did you think!?!

How do you feel? Do you feel more energized?!! Maybe a bit out of breath? Sounds like you need more practice :D
